Rich Cultural Representation by Alumni in the Last 10 Boishakhi Parades.

Over the past decade, the alums of Jahangirnagar University, through the Jahangirnagar Alumni Association of America (JAAA), have been a driving force in promoting Bangladeshi culture in the heart of New York City. The Boishakhi Parade, an annual celebration of the Bangla New Year, has become a hallmark of cultural pride and unity. Organized with vibrant processions, traditional dhol performances, and displays of folk art, this event represents the resilience of Bangladeshi heritage amidst a globalized world.

The last 10 Boishakhi parades have brought together diverse alums, children, and community members to celebrate traditions such as wearing colorful sarees and panjabis, enjoying panta-ilish, and performing traditional dances and songs. The parade is more than just a celebration—it is a statement of cultural pride, ensuring that the youth raised abroad connect to their roots and feel inspired to preserve them for future generations.

Youth Empowerment Through Cultural Celebrations

Beyond the Boishakhi Parade, alums have actively empowered youth by engaging them in various cultural and educational initiatives. The Winter Festival, International Mother Language Day, Summer Festival, and annual picnics are all key events where young individuals find a platform to express themselves, learn about their cultural identity, and build a sense of belonging.

1. International Mother Language Day

The alums’s celebration of International Mother Language Day has been pivotal in educating young people about the sacrifices of the 1952 Language Movement. Events feature art competitions, poetry recitations, and plays performed by students, emphasizing the value of linguistic and cultural diversity. These activities instill a sense of pride in heritage while raising awareness about the importance of preserving one’s mother tongue.

2. Autumn/Winter Festival

The Festival provides an opportunity to engage youth in showcasing folk traditions through music, dance, and art. Alums and young performers collaborate to create cultural programs, including theatrical performances based on Bangladeshi stories and themes. These experiences foster confidence and creativity in participants, especially the younger generation, who take center stage to represent their heritage.

3. Summer Festival & Annual Picnic

These events bring alums, families, and communities together in a relaxed and festive environment. Activities often include sporting events, traditional food fairs, and live music performances. Youth empowerment is a central theme, as children and young adults take part in organizing and performing, developing leadership skills and cultural appreciation.

4. Boishakhi Summer Festival

The Boishakhi Summer Festival builds upon the vibrancy of the New Year parade, extending the celebration into a multi-day event. With workshops on traditional crafts, music lessons, and storytelling, the festival is an immersive experience for participants of all ages. Alums ensure that the next generation learns to appreciate cultural heritage and actively participate in preserving it.
